The Desert Resort, Mandawa

Fresco Trails

The Shekhawati region, often called as ‘An open art gallery of Rajasthan’, for centuries has attracted many tourists and art lovers owing to its attractive murals known as ‘Frescos’ on the walls and ceilings of many temples, forts and havelis.

Made with pigmented water colors on freshly laid plaster these captivating and mesmeric pieces of art have mainly been influenced by Jaipur, Persian and Mughal Schools of Painting.

These thematic artworks range from the earliest ones since 1750 until the era of Mughal Raj and depicts distinct change in tastes and preferences. In the earlier themes many murals have predominantly portrayed a mythological influence blended with depiction of many local legends, historical events, folktales, hunting images, rangmala, animals, plants and illustrations of everyday life whereas the murals of the British era mainly demonstrates the influence of technology and overall development like motor cars, ships, airplanes, trains, bicycles, gramophone, telephones.
